Keep It Simple and Get the Sale!

Our habits tend to control most of what we do.  When I was in sales I had the habit of becoming overly friendly with my prospect and not asking for the sale early enough.  This cost me valuable time and energy that didn’t need to be spent on a customer who was ready to buy.

How does that apply to busines cards?  Keep it simple and you’ll get more sales.

Do you need the title of, “Regional Departmant Manager, Sales and Finance” or would “Department Mangager” work just as well?

Do you need to have your office phone number, cell phone number, pager number, after hours phone number, and a voice mail number listed on your business card?  Or would just your office and cell phone number be sufficient?

Do you need to list the fact that you have an office in New York, Washington D.C., Seattle, and Los Angeles?  We get it, you’re all over the place!

Keep it simple please!  And for your sake, you’ll earn more sales!

Introduction Cards vs Business Cards

Many people claim that their “Introduction Cards” are more effective than regular business cards.  This logic is seriously flawed.

Business cards usually do two things.

1. Represent you.

2. Represent your business, or the business you work for.

Introduction cards do one thing.

1. Represent you.

So with that in mind, how could introduction cards be “better” than business cards, they’re the same thing!

The Problem With Clients

So I have this client.  He said, “Do whatever you think looks good, I like red, black and white.”  I said great, creative freedom.  I took it upon myself to design him a great business card, even though I gave his a really good deal because he is a friend of a friend.

In total now, I have revised his business card 7 times!  7 different revisions changing line structure, fonts, locations of graphics, you name it, I’ve done it.  Is this a common problem with clients and business card designers?

I want a client to give me creative freedom, and realize that I know what looks good and trendy, he knows what looks like 1992.  1992 is gone, let it go man!

What Should Be On Free Business Cards?

Someone asked me, “What information should my free business cards contain?”

I would call this mandatory information.   This mandatory information isn’t going to be mandatory for every business, but if you have this information, you won’t regret it.

1. Name and Title

This information is vital because without it, the customer won’t remember you.  Essentially you will just be giving them nothing of value.  if they just wanted your company name and contact info, they could pull out a phone book.

2. Contact info

Contact info is essential.  When you give someone a business card, you are hoping to make something of this potential contact.  Maybe a sale, maybe a business partner.  Either way, you want something.  This contact info should also be your personal contact info.  Don’t just put your company contact info on your business card.  Make sure there is an extension, or your cell phone number, or your email address.

3. Reason for Contact

This mandatory information might not be used very often, but it should.  When you hand someone a business card you also want to include a reason for them to contact you.  This reason could be a special discount, an offer for personalized service, or just the promise that your company is better than your competitors.  This reason could be in a one-line message on the back of the business card, or it could even be the company slogan.  Somehow you want to give the customer a reason to contact you.

Use those three mandatory information tips on your next free business cards!

Find Free Postcards

Are postcards free like business cards?  Usually not.  However, if you know this little secret, you might be able to find free postcards.

One day I contacted a company that printed promotional pens.  This company also printed other promotional items, but at the time I didn’t know that.  This company also printed postcards.

When my order of promotional pens arrived, in the box were a few sample postcards for other companies they had done.  The next day I called to inquire about pricing of the postcards.  They told me the price, and I thought it was reasonable.

I emailed the lady later in the day with my image I wanted on the postcards and asked her if she could print me some sample cards, send them out and I would review them, make changes, and place my order.

5 days later I received 100 postcards!

You can’t beat free!
