Print on the back vs. Leaving it blank

For a long time I have been an avid supporter of those leaving the back of their business cards blank. However, when I created and printed my business cards I came to a different realization.

What I realized is this, the front of my business cards don’t offer enough information about what I do. Obviously that is a pretty common problem with business cards, because normally you hand someone a business card and tell them what you do.

However, that doesn’t always work, especially if you are using your business cards in your marketing efforts. That is what I love to do.

Previously I have advised many clients to leave the back of their business cards empty for notes, quotes and other ideas to pass along to a client. But is that sound advice if your company name doesn’t explain what you do. Mine just says, “AfterHim Media“. It doesn’t say that we are a Christian owned company building effective websites and IT consulting. That is what it should say.

So in this case should I scrap the 900 business cards I have left and reprint some with my new information on the back? Or can I send these back to the printer? I doubt I can because they usually print them in sheets then cut them. Is it possible to get information put on the back post-printing?

I guess I should have spent more time on planning rather than on design. It is a $100 lesson, but one well learned.

The Problem With Clients

So I have this client.  He said, “Do whatever you think looks good, I like red, black and white.”  I said great, creative freedom.  I took it upon myself to design him a great business card, even though I gave his a really good deal because he is a friend of a friend.

In total now, I have revised his business card 7 times!  7 different revisions changing line structure, fonts, locations of graphics, you name it, I’ve done it.  Is this a common problem with clients and business card designers?

I want a client to give me creative freedom, and realize that I know what looks good and trendy, he knows what looks like 1992.  1992 is gone, let it go man!

Do You Anti-Alias?

Anti-alias, by definition means to smooth the edges of a graphic or text so it doesn’t appear so jagged (pixelated).

By making sure you anti-alias most of your business card creations, you will not only create smoother edges, but most, if not all, of your images will look better.

Wikipedia has an entry regarding anti-aliasing that says, “anti-aliasing is the technique of minimizingAnti-Alias in Photoshop aliasing (jagged or blocky patterns) when representing a high-resolution signal at a lower resolution.”

I took a screenshot showing how to turn anti-aliasing on in Adobe Photoshop CS2.
